Professor Raffaello Castoria, a Visiting Lecturer as a Foreign Expert

Edit: Time: 2015-12-07 Hits:

Professor Raffaello Castoria is a renowned senior researcher and a leading scientist of Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences, University of Molise, Italy. Professor Raffaello Castoria has long distinguished himself in the field of postharvest diseases of fruit and vegetable research, control and biological biodegradation of mycotoxins in agricultural products. He played a pioneering role in the research field of international biological control of postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables.

Professor Raffaello became a visiting lecturer of the School of Food and Biological Engineering of Jiangsu University as a foreign expert from 30th March to 2nd May 2015. During the period of Professor Raffaello Castoria’s stay in Jiangsu University, he worked hard, and successfully completed all his work schedules. Firstly, he participated in the undergraduate courses "Food Technology" and "Microbiology", and was generally applauded by the students.

In addition, Professor Raffaello made two presentations titled "Biodegradation of mycotoxins - microbes in the service of man and animals “and " Research progress of antagonistic yeast control of apple patulin ", in the university and the school in separate occasions. The professor also, participated in four seminars of professor Hong-yin Zhang’s research team. He offered one-by-one guidance to all graduate students about their research work, and proposed suggestions on experimental designs. Moreover, professor Raffaello also guided the team on instrumental procedures and usage of RT-PCR and 2D on several occasions.

At the same time, professor Raffaello put forward many constructive suggestions of scientific research thoughts and methods for graduate students. Assisted a Ghanaian national doctoral student, Gustav Komla Mahunu who published review paper as the first author in a top international academic journals “Critical Reviews in Microbiology” (the latest impact factor of 6.087) in April this year; Then, a thesis as the first author to international mainstream academic journals in Biological Control (SCI and impact factor of 1.635) .

Furthermore, professor Castoria participated in research work of professor Hong-yin Zhang of " Research on physiological mechanism of Rhodotorula Mucilaginosa controlling patulin production and degradation on apple " funded by National Natural Science. Some preliminary progresses has been made, preliminary reveals the mechanism of degradation of patulin in apple by antagonism yeast, and a co-authored review paper "Recent Developments in the Enhancement of Biocontrol of Postharvest Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables" was submitted to international authoritative journal Trends in Biotechnology (SCI and impact factor of 11.958).

Last but not the least, the co-operation of professor Castoria with the research team of professor Hong-yin Zhang has accomplished many original scientific research achievements, improved the level of biological control research in the field of postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables of School of Food and Biological Engineering, raised the image of Jiangsu University in the international front, and enhanced the internationalization of the school.
