First PhD student graduate of the World Food Preservation Centre

Dr. Gustav Komla Mahunu was enrolled into Jiangsu University in November 2012 as the first PhD. student of the World Food preservation Research Center (WFPRC). He has successfully defended his thesis in June, 2016 and awarded PhD in Food Science and Engineering. The World Food Preservation Research Centre was launched by Professor Charles Wilson who played a pioneering role in bio-control of postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables.

The centre was set up by Jiangsu University (China), University of Florida (USA) and the University of Ghana (Ghana). Currently, there are 15 research universities from 5 continents who are active members of the centre. The formation of the World Food Preservation Research Center aims to strengthen cooperation in the field of food preservation technologies, education and training for students and scholars from developing countries. The centre also seeks to build the capacity of beneficiaries on research and practices in the area of food storage and preservation among universities and research institutions

Dr. Mahunu’s thesis was on the mechanism of antagonistic yeast in the control of patulin in apple fruit under the supervision of Professor Dr. Zhang Hongyin. He published two academic research papers in Journal of Critical Reviews in Microbiology and Biological Control with impact factors of 8.192 and 2.012 respectively. Three of his papers are still under review.

Recently, the Future plans and activities of the Jiangsu University sub-centre of the WFPC were highlighted by the founder and chairman of the Centre, Prof. Wilson at the 8th International Conference in Spain.
